Window Anatomy

Clad
The exterior frame of the window. Marvin's standard extruded aluminum exterior cladding is second to none. Think of it as a suit of armor covered with the ultimate finish.

Frame
There are three different components to a frame: sill, header, and jamb. They hold the operating and/or stationary sash.

Glazing
The glass in a window or a door.

Hardware
The operating components of your window or door: locks, handles, hinges, etc.

Header
The frame member that runs horizontally across the top of the frame.

Jamb
The part of the frame that runs vertically between the header and sill. Jamb extensions can be used to create a frame that matches the depth of existing walls.

Lite
A single area of glass. We offer many different ways to create patterns of divided lites, each with its own special benefits.

Muntins
The bars that divide the glass area into lites.

Panel
The main section of a door that's installed into a frame. It's made of horizontal rails and vertical stiles.

Sash
This is what you probably think of as the "window." It's the main section, whether operating (i.e., able to open) or stationary, that's installed into a frame. It's made of horizontal rails and vertical stiles.

Sill
The frame member that runs horizontally across the bottom of the frame.
